The sensitivity of the Brazilian disease to antimonial drugs does not fit with the resistance of the infantum subspecies found in Portugal. Today there are epidemics of kala-azar among poor children in favelas in cities of north eastern Brazil such as Teresina, Sao Lui and Santarem.
